On Saturday, we headed back down the mountain and into Lucca. The old town is entirely encircled by a wall (actually, the fourth generation of wall with the original being built in Roman times.) The wall is wide enough for a the equivalent of a two-lane road, but is only for walking and pedaling. We had a respectable lunch in town, and we wandered around, stopping in a gelateria (Momo’s) and a pastry shop.
For me, the best part was the Guinigi Tower. Apparently, the wealthy in town tried to outdo each other by building bigger and better towers. This one has a garden on top. While Vicki was on the phone dealing with dinner reservations, I climbed up and took these photos of Lucca:
