Day 1: Zurich

Our first day on the Continent was Thursday, May 10.

From Vicki: We got into Zurich in the morning and took the tram from the airport to the Central Station. Our hotel was a quick walk from there, so we went to leave our luggage. However, our room was ready (yay!), so we settled in for a nap. Thursday, being a religious holiday in Switzerland, had two defining characteristics to us: 1) the shops and most restaurants were closed, and 2) the church bells ring a LOT. So naps were shortened, which maybe is a good thing, since we might have slept the day away. We found a restaurant that was not Chinese or Indian and settled down for some good non-vegan eats: I had potato and bacon soup, and Dan had air-dried beef, spatzle, and pickled vegetables. We walked around in the drizzle, got followed by a weirdo (a weirdo is someone weirder than we are) and stopped for cash so that we could pay Bryan when we go to Metato. Here’s a news flash: Switzerland is not part of the EU, so they use Swiss francs, not euros. We learned that after Dan withdrew 500CHF from an ATM.

Now, here’s Dan with the photos.

A few shots of Zurich.

This clock on St. Peter’s Church is the largest tower clock face in Europe.

Dinner was wonderful and excessive. We had truly delicious fondue, two kinds of cheese and one of chocolate. Our server was entertaining and helpful. I like to think I was as well.

Then the festivities ended, because we got the fraud alert from our credit card company. So we spent some time on the phone trying to figure out how to get another card sent to us. Did we tell them we are on the move? Yep. Did they send it where they said they would? Nope.
